Begin with the End in Mind

In simple words, as Covey said, you have to imagine a destination of your life in your mind. Think about a 100-meter race. Before you start your run, don’t you look at the end point of the track? Everyone does that! Unless you look at that end, how would you know where you have to reach, right? It’s just like that. Everybody has a goal of their life. No, Covey did not mean the professional or emotional success as your goal, he meant to say the “goal of your life.” Let me explain.

Most people consider their professional success as their “goal of life.” Some want to become an MD, some want to become a singer or actor, some want to be a CEO of an MNC – all these are just professional goals. Certainly, you won’t be very happy in your deathbed if you have become only an MD, or a CEO or a singer. A life-goal is so much more than professional success. Most people can’t even think beyond their professional or monetary success, this is just a mindset most of us have.

So, you are probably thinking that the emotional goal is the life-goal. Nothing can be further from the truth. You want to marry that girl, or you want to have a kid, or you want to become Buddhist someday – all these are your emotional goals, and once you succeeded, there will still be more life left to live.

A life goal is such, once you achieve that, you won’t be afraid to die. You will love your life more, but at the same time, you’ll be able to embrace death elegantly. There will be no regret, no fear, no anger, no feeling of loss when you’ll take your last breath.

So, start from there – start from the end in your mind. Start imagining what you want to become or what you want to do ultimately in your life. Ask yourself, would you be in peace forever once you do that or become that? Would that be the end of your lifelong quest? Ask in your mind that if you die immediately after achieving that goal, would you be afraid? Would you feel any regret? Any lose? If your answer is affirmative, you still don’t know what’s the goal of your life. You should first work on that part before everything else.

Everybody must have a goal, a vision of their life. Without that goal, that vision, you’re going nowhere. You need to imagine and visualize that goal first. Once you’re successfully able to do that, you can start working towards that goal. Since that moment, every step you’ll walk, every word you’ll say, every breath you’ll take – would be to achieve that goal in your life.
